Program: Sustainable Forests and Communities Initiative

Objectives: The mission of the Sustainable Forests and Communities Initiative is to promote forest conservation and environmentally sustainable economic development, along with community building, at the local level.

  • Ecology - Work in holistic land stewardship approaches involving management, conservation and ecological restoration
  • Economy -- Work in enterprise-based conservation and/or job creation strategies that are of appropriate scale and are environmentally sound
  • Community -- Use inclusive, innovative and/or collaborative public processes to meet their natural resource and conservation goals

Eligible Applicants: All applicants must have 501(c)3 status. Locally based organizations within the Initiative's geographic area are eligible to apply. Regional and national organizations working to promote the integration of ecology, economy, and community, and who are working with local partners operating within the Initiative's geographic area, are also eligible to apply

Program Requirements:  Impacts expected:

  • Demonstration that local institutions and individuals are carrying on environmental and community sustainability activities as a result of your project
  • Positive activities: Specific actions undertaken in your project that halt degraded landscapes or conserve intact areas
  • Building economy: Increase sustainable employment in your community
